Neck Pain

Stiff Neck: Chiropractor or Massage? Here's the Honest Answer

Let's get the disclosure out of the way: a chiropractor is writing this, so you'd be right to expect a certain conclusion. Here's the thing though — we send people to massage therapists all the time, and a decent number of our patients arrived because their massage therapist sent them to us. The two professions aren't rivals. They just fix different things, and your stiff neck is one of them.

So instead of a sales pitch, here's the actual difference, and a simple one-week test that tells you which one your neck needs.

What each one actually does

Massage works on muscle and soft tissue. A good remedial massage therapist releases tension, improves blood flow, and makes you feel like a functioning human again. For a neck that's tight because you slept on it strangely, hauled luggage through the airport, or spent a week more stressed than usual — massage is often exactly right, and frankly more pleasant than anything we do.

Chiropractic works on the joints and alignment underneath those muscles. Here's the mechanism that matters: when a spinal joint loses its normal motion or position, the surrounding muscles tighten to protect it. That protective tension is what you feel as 'stiffness.' You can massage that tension away — it feels wonderful — but if the joint underneath hasn't changed, your nervous system reinstates the guard within days. The muscle was never the problem. It was the bodyguard.

The one-week test

Book a massage. Enjoy it thoroughly. Then pay attention to the calendar:

  • If the stiffness stays gone — it was muscular. Congratulations, you've found your answer, and it comes with whale music.
  • If the same spot is tight again within a few days — the muscle is guarding something. That's a joint problem wearing a muscle costume, and no amount of repeat massage will retire the bodyguard.
  • If it comes back with headaches, or the stiffness sits at the very top of your neck — read our piece on headaches that start in the neck, because those upper joints are repeat offenders.

We meet a lot of people in Bondi Junction who've been running the massage loop for years — a monthly appointment that buys a fortnight of relief, forever. Lovely as a ritual. Expensive as a treatment plan. If you've been doing repeat-massage maths for more than six months, the structure underneath has earned a proper look.

Failed the one-week test? Your first consultation with us is free — we'll assess the joints your massage therapist keeps finding tension over, and show you what's actually there.

What a chiropractic assessment finds that a massage can't

Hands on a muscle can feel tension. What they can't see is why it's there. Our assessment checks each cervical joint for restricted motion, measures your posture (forward head carriage is the usual suspect — we wrote a whole guide on desk posture for a reason), and where clinically indicated, uses EOS standing imaging to see your neck's actual alignment and curve. Very low dose, bulk billed through Medicare, no GP referral needed.

That last part matters because the cervical spine has a natural forward curve, and years of screens flatten it. A flattened curve loads joints and discs unevenly, the muscles guard, and you get a neck that's 'always tight' no matter who rubs it. You can't massage a curve back into a spine. You can correct the joint restrictions maintaining it — which is the part we do.

The honest summary

  • Stiff after an awkward sleep, a flight, a stressful fortnight → massage. Genuinely.
  • Stiff in the same spot, returning for months or years → chiropractic assessment first, massage as a very enjoyable supplement.
  • Stiff with headaches, arm tingling, or after any car accident — even an old one → assessment, no debate. Old whiplash is the most common hidden history we find in chronic neck patients.

And if you come in and the assessment says your problem is muscular? We'll tell you, and you can go back to the massage table vindicated. The first consultation is free precisely so finding out costs you nothing but the bus fare up Bondi Road.
